Fjær Kalkun - Turkey Smudging Feather

Fjær Kalkun - Turkey Smudging Feather

Turkey Smudging Feather Fan by Kim Wilson, Winnebago Sioux, USA

Product Information

Dimensions: Overall length of whole fan (including the leather handle, not including leather straps) is about 13 inches (33 cms).

We say (by Brett): Believe or not I have had a lot of trouble finding a decent single feather fan of consistent quality. We can get hold of certain feathers for smudging etc. but none of them I have felt are good enough. The feathers are often not good enough quality. I like these feathers because they are from wild turkey from the USA and the handle is handcrafted by Kim Wilson. Each handle is hand-stitched in a good way by an artist that loves their work.

Dictionary Terms Explained

Turkey - Faith, give-away, earth eagle
In the Native American tradition the turkey helped to create the world, and is thought of as the give-away or earth eagle. In the give-away ceremony someone will give away perhaps all that they own for the good of the People. In the giving away of material possessions we are acknowledging who we really are - spiritual beings.

The spirit of turkey is free, and opens up the channels between us and others on a meaningful level. The turkey sacrifices itself so that others may live, and this can show us courage and faith in our present life and the next.

Kim Wilson - Winnebago Sioux tribe
Kim Wilson is a member of the Winnebago Sioux tribe and lives in the USA. We trade directly with this artist making sure they receive a fair price for their work. All items will be good quality but because of the hand made nature of the goods it is possible that crafts such as these may have small differences between them. These small artistic differences (if there are any) should be seen as a testimony to the fact that you are buying authentic Native American crafts.
