Shiva gav sig iväg på jakt efter ett nytt huvud och det första han stötte på var en stor elefant. Han tog elefantens huvud och satte där Ganeshas hubud en gång suttit. Parvatis fick också Shiva att lova att Ganesha skulle vara den Gud man tillbad först, därför nämner man alltid Ganesha först i bönerna.
