by Francois Tapernoux

The Golden Rider Tarot is a clone of the original Rider-Waite cards, repainted here in rich oils by Francois Tapernoux. His images have a softer blend of colours, but have blurred expressions and lack the line detail of the originals.

Number of cards in deck: 78

Measurements: 2.75 x 4.7 inches, or 70 x 120 mm.

Back of card: Gold, with a thin dark gold frame of same color as a gold cross through the middle (makes it look like old-time window panes) & a slightly lighter gold color inside the frame. In the very center, behind the cross, a pink dot, about 1.1 inch/27 mm in diameter. Very plain. Can be inverted. Despite all the gold, these cards are not gilt-edged.

Booklet included: Yes, 41 pages, 2.65 x 4.5 inches, or 67 x 114 mm.

Publisher: AG Muller. Printed in Switzerland.

Comments: These cards were a series of oil paintings based on the original Rider-Waite tarot. Notes with this deck do not tell what size these paintings were, though the lack of detail suggests a smallish format.

The booklet says these cards, "vibrate in caleidoscope of colours unparalleled even in the colourful world of the Tarot. Each card radiates its own unique aura of harmonizing shades and nuances. Merely glancing at a picture elicits a spontaneous response, for such colours speak directly to the subconscious. Thus, an important premise of modern psychology proves its worth, for colours do indeed influence the human psyche and there is an intrinsic connection between colour and thinking and feeling. In this way the Golden Rider Tarot opens up a vivid spectrum of all the innumerable possibilities and potentials inherent in any situation." (pgs 3-4)

Okay, is this how you see these cards? Myself, I would rather have the nuances in the original drawings, cartoonish as they may be.

As the Rider illustrations are perhaps the best-known tarot in the world, I've used the bottom row to illustrate pairs of cards that look alike: The Lovers & the Devil; and the 2 & 3 of Wands. One final note about the back of the cards: The color & thickness of the golden frame on the back is identical to the color & thickness of the golden frame on the front.

Another Rider deck for its many enthusiasts. Enjoy!
