Inspired and directed by the life and works of the medieval Italian poet Dante, who is perhaps best known for his Divine Comedy. The Dante Tarot is a stunning and unique tarot deck that has tranformed the traditional tarot symbols.
The Dante Tarot was inspired by the life and creations of Dante Alighieri, who was an Italian poet born in 1265. He is best known for his Divina Commedia (Divine Comedy), a poem that describes a journey into the three parts of the Christian afterlife: Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso – Hell, Purgatory and Heaven.
As there is no real relationship between Dante Alighieri and the Tarot, the four suits and the major arcana cards, or Trionfi, have been transformed to fit with Dantesque themes.
The Dante Tarot is an artistically interesting, even arresting, deck. Bordered stylishly in black, the surreal and streamlined work of Andrea Serio would not be out of place in a museum or a chic and classy restaurant. This deck abounds with flowing figures (many with elongated body parts) and artistic distortions. The brilliantly- colored images look like faceted jewels against the black background. If this were simply an art deck, I’d give it two thumbs up. However, it is much more, and needs to be examined in the light of all its attributes.

This beautiful deck summarises the ethical philosophical and spiritual concepts in the Major Arcane as expressed by the divine poet in his Convivio ideas that date back to Socrates and Plato but which are essentially eternal. The minor Arcana describe the poet’s life and narrate the stops along the supernatural journey through Hell Purgatory and paradise including contemplation of Eternal Light.
